Devero Hotel - Milan

Issue 24 May / June 2009

Italian architect Erna Corbetta has collaborated with furniture makers Poliform to design and build bespoke interiors for the Devero Hotel.

Branded a ‘Business & Design’ hotel, the Devero is much more than the average roadside stop-over that corporate travellers are so often subject to. Its location – mid way between central Milan and Bergamo, one of the main gateways to the city – means it is ideally located for the region’s burgeoning exhibition visitor.

Architect Erna Corbetta was commissioned to design spaces that would leave ‘a lasting impression’ on the guest. In alliance with one of Italy’s leading furniture manufacturers, Corbetta designed almost every piece of furniture in the hotel, made-to-measure by Poliform. The resulting hotel is a fusion of Poliform’s style, and Corbetta’s attention to detail.

75 Business class rooms effectively utilise the space incorporating a chaise longue and L-shaped natural oak Davenport – a writing desk that doubles as a vanity unit – designed by Corbetta. The alternating colour palettes of bronze and silver extend to the upholstery, textured linen wallcoverings, and metallic effect sliding headboard which allows for flexible positioning of the bed. The bathroom, separated from the bedroom by a frosted glass screen, is respectful of Corbetta’s clean lines and contemporary finishes while flexible lighting is provided by the classic Anglepoise-style lamp, in this instance by Artemide.

Two Executive Suites, each measuring 45m2, have been individually designed by Corbetta with Poliform producing the casegoods, furniture, and sound absorbing ceiling panels. The ‘white’ suite is divided by a three-sided bedstead – with integrated lighting and power sockets, – facing outwards creating an element of privacy from the living space. The bathroom features a separate shower and Turkish bath, and is clad in pearly Bisazza Mosaic and Carrara marble from Tuscany. To continue the Italian theme, lighting has been carefully selected from Artemide, Flos, and FontanaArte.

The six American-style Loft Suites are designed as duplex apartments for long-stay guests. Each incorporates a different accent colour into its wallcoverings and furniture as a contrast to the otherwise natural scheme. The extensive lower floor space features a work area, lounge with sofabed, and kitchenette, cleverly concealed beneath Poliform’s sliding countertop.

A stainless steel and glass staircase leads to the master bedroom featuring Poliform’s walnut headed bed, set forward from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Folding doors open up to the bathroom where LED mood lighting soothes the mind and a Duravit whirlpool bath with freestanding taps soothes the body.

The impressive Penthouse reflects Corbetta’s desire for ‘wellness’ by encompassing zones for work, rest and play. A four-poster king-size canopy bed with deluxe linens dominates the room against a golden backdrop. Casegoods, including a centrally placed sideboard backing onto Poliform’s deep-seated sofa and sliding wardrobe system, match the dark wenge parquet flooring. A full height glass-encased chandelier partially conceals a Devon & Devon rolltop bathtub adjacent to the bathroom which features a Turkish bath and double shower. Technogym’s Kinesis system sits in the open plan suite, without detracting from the natural beauty of the interiors.

A new tower complex adjacent to the hotel is currently under development. This will be linked to the lobby via a footbridge and will house an additional fifty guestrooms, and a spa.
