Sleeper Magazine November / December 2010
Details of the first properties from Edition, Marriott International’s new hotel brand created in partnership with Ian Schrager, have been unveiled.
The brand is due to debut in Waikiki Beach in October, and will also open a property in Istanbul later this year. Further openings have been announced for Mexico City, Barcelona, Bangkok, and Miami. Several other cities are in various stages of development.
The Waikiki Edition, designed by Yabu Pushelberg, will offer a restaurant by renowned chef Morimoto, a Crazybox nightclub, a Sunrise Pool with lushly landscaped gardens by Deborah Nevins, and a private Sunset Beach with its own lagoon and imported sand from the neighboring Hawaiian islands. The hotel’s various bars will include an intimate Lobby Bar hidden behind a secret passage “as if tucked away in a castle”. Surf and bikini ‘boot camps’ will give guests the opportunity for “dramatic weight loss and loss of inches together with custom vegetarian and organic spa menus.”
The Istanbul Edition is being designed by Gabellini Sheppard Associates, and will offer 77 oversized guestrooms and suites with rosewood or soaped oak walls, ceilings and floors. Other design features include silk area rugs and marble bathrooms with floor-to-ceiling glass enclosed rain showers. The double-height lobby will include gold and silver leaf mosaic detailing, and travertine floor and walls. Drinking and dining options include a Cipriani restaurant, a lobby bar with garden terrace, and a exclusive private event space on the Penthouse floor. The hotel will also include a 20,000ft2 spa by ESPA, luxury retail boutiques and a private drawing room with honesty bar and screening room.
The Mexico City Edition (pictured above) will be housed in Samara – a mixed-use development combining corporative offices, a hotel, and shopping mall in the Santa Fe district. The complex has been designed by Diametro Arquitectos in collaboration with Cherem Serrano Architects and Arquitec.
In Miami, the old South Beach Marriott is being converted to an Edition hotel.
The Bangkok property is to take residence in the MahaNakhon tower, designed by Ole Scheeren / OMA. The 77-storey high-rise complex is being developed by PACE Development and joint venture partner IBC Limited and will be the tallest building in Bangkok on completion.
