Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide is to operate a new Westin hotel in the Elbe Philharmonic complex, Hamburg designed by world-renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron.
The new Westin Hamburg Hotel will open in 2012 under an agreement between Starwood and its joint venture partner, Arabella Hospitality Group. Expected to become a cultural and architectural landmark, Herzog & de Meuron’s Elbe Philharmonic complex is described as “one of Europe’s most ambitious development projects,” and involves installing the Swiss architects’ new glass structure atop a red brick warehouse built in 1963 by the late Hamburg architect Werner Kallmorgen. The building will comprise three concert halls, a hotel, apartments, and a public square elevated 37 metres above the river.
The ten-storey hotel component will feature 244 guestrooms including 39 suites, a restaurant, a cafe, destination bar, lounge and a spa including a Westin WorkOut fitness centre and an indoor swimming pool. The hotel will comprise close to 9,000ft2 of meeting and event space, including eight meeting rooms and a ballroom.
Through a joint venture with Arabella Hospitality Group, Starwood currently operates more than 30 hotels in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Mallorca and South Africa under its Westin, Sheraton, St. Regis, The Luxury Collection and Four Points by Sheraton brands. Westin is currently represented by five hotels in Germany, including The Westin Grand Frankfurt, The Westin Grand Munich Arabellapark, The Westin Grand Hotel in Berlin, The Westin Bellevue in Dresden and The Westin Leipzig.
