Tierra Patagonia

Chile

Sleeper Magazine July / August 2011

Three of Chile’s leading architects, Cazu Zegers, Roberto Benavente, and Rodrigo Ferrer, have designed Tierra Patagonia, a new resort blending traditional Patagonian hospitality with design inspired by its dramatic surrounding location.

The 40-room resort – sister property to the award-winning Tierra Atacama – occupies a premier location on the shores of Lake Sarmiento at the entrance to Torres del Paine National Park and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, enveloped by stunning views of the legendary Paine Massif, one of the most photographed landmarks of the Patagonian region. The design of the hotel suggests a wind-blown dune blending with the natural flow and geology of the Pampa as it reaches the lake and the mountains of the Paine range.

The architects have designed the hotel to minimise the impact on the land while maximising the awe-inspiring views. The interiors are being created by Chilean designers Alexandra Edwards and Carolina Delpiano, who also designed the award-winning spaces at Tierra Atacama. Edwards and Delpiano are incorporating hand-crafted furnishings using natural Patagonian textiles, wools and trims, to evoke the surrounding environment with comfort and style.

Chilean Patagonia is described as “a land of extremes, of diverse eco-systems and great beauty,” which appeals to travelers who wish to get far away from it all. Located in the most southerly region of Chile, its anthropological history includes the indigenous people, explorers such as Magellan, Drake, Fitzroy, and Darwin – and the early Patagonian settlers who struggled with the elements to survive.
Tierra Patagonia has been designed so that all guestrooms have spectacular views across the lake to Torres del Paine. Accommodation types include three generous-sized two-storey Design Suites, 37 Tierra Patagonia standard double rooms, and family suites offering capacity for up to six people.

Wellness and pampering is central to the guest experience at Tierra Patagonia, with a full range of signature spa treatments at Tierra’s UMA spa, an indoor pool and outdoor whirlpool bath. Body and facial treatments will embrace local customs and incorporate local elements such as stones and crystals, plants and herbs.
