Jurys Inn NewcastleGateshead Quays welcomes a living roof
6 May 2011 08:27:58 GMT
The new Jurys Inn NewcastleGateshead Quays will be home to the first green roof of its size in Gateshead. The 203-bedroom, four storey hotel situated on Baltic Quay is set to open later this summer.
The ecologically responsible living sedum roof is formed of living plants which improves the thermal insulation of the building, helps support the local ecology and aids biodiversity by providing a healthy habitat for indigenous flora and fauna.
Using plant life instead of slate or other traditional roofing materials, the roof will not only look attractive, it will also reduce the risk of flood by retaining a proportion of the annual rainfall and reducing rainwater run-off.
Jurys Inn has implemented a range of green programmes across all its hotels, from installing energy efficient light bulbs to monitoring each hotel’s energy consumption using an external assessor. The group has also taken simple steps which have had a big effect – reducing the number of toilet flushes when cleaning bedrooms for instance – these have helped make annual savings of 79 million litres of water. Jurys Inn employees have been key to the success of the green programme contributing ideas and suggestions, with each hotel having a ‘green champion’ to help drive new local initiatives.
David Malanaphy, General Manager of Jurys Inn NewcastleGateshead Quays said: “We are on track to open our exciting new hotel in the heart of energetic Gateshead later this Summer. The green roof will help us to become even more energy and waste efficient, ultimately benefiting our local community. We're keen to make green changes where we can in line with the hotel group's commitment to the environment and reinforce the work we already do which has made us environmental leaders within the hotel industry.”
