Hotel Indigo opens its doors in Glasgow

15 April 2011 09:54:01 GMT

InterContinental Hotels Group has grown its boutique hotel portfolio in the UK with the opening of its third UK Hotel Indigo hotel in Glasgow.

The hotel is on Waterloo Street, in the heart of the financial district and within walking distance of the main shopping area, numerous banks, bars, restaurants and cafes. The hotel is also conveniently located close to the Central Station making it ideal for people who are on a city break and want to explore Glasgow.

The 95 bedroom Hotel Indigo Glasgow is owned by Chardon Management, part of the Chardon Group, and has one restaurant, the Limelight Bar and Grill, plus a host of facilities for businesspeople.

The Hotel Indigo Glasgow has been converted from an industrial office building. The historic building was originally Glasgow’s first power station and was used to illuminate the Glasgow School of Art. Hotel Indigo brand standards don’t dictate the number or size of rooms in a property, making it ideally suited to conversion properties. Conversions are attractive to developers because they require less financing than new builds and can be up and running in a shorter period of time.

Hotel Indigo properties feature contemporary design and bold colours. The decor in each hotel is unique and reflects its location. From the moment guests enter Hotel Indigo Glasgow they will be aware that this is a hotel firmly rooted in the city, with the artwork reflecting the history and architecture of the area from a mural of famous Glaswegians to paintings of 25 of Glasgow’s greatest heroes created by 25 up-and-coming local artists.

Kirk Kinsell, president, Europe, Middle East and Africa, IHG said: “Hotel Indigo Glasgow offers guests the best of both worlds – the individuality and unique design of a boutique hotel with the reassurance and benefits of a big hotel group. Hotel Indigo Glasgow is right in the heart of Glasgow which means it’s perfectly placed for people who want to explore the sights and sounds of the city.”

Maurice Taylor, founder and chief executive of the Chardon Group and an IHG franchisee for more than 15 years, added: “Hotel Indigo Glasgow is a unique, distinctive hotel. The building has retained its original character while the design and artwork inside adds a contemporary twist and reflects the heritage of the city.”

Hotel Indigo Glasgow joins two existing hotels in the UK. Hotel Indigo London Paddington opened in 2009, Hotel Indigo London Tower Hill followed in 2010. Hotel Indigo Liverpool, with 151 bedrooms, is scheduled to open in June 2011, followed by Hotel Indigo Edinburgh, Hotel Indigo Birmingham and Hotel Indigo Newcastle all scheduled to open in 2012.

The Hotel Indigo brand was launched in the United States in 2004 making it IHG’s youngest brand. There are 38 Hotel Indigo hotels around the world and 62 in the development pipeline, which will open in the next two to three years.

There are seven existing hotels from the IHG family of brands in Glasgow; one Crowne Plaza, three Holiday Inn and three Holiday Inn Express hotels.
