The Wadi Alswani Resort, designed by Dexter Moren Associates for the Al Birdi Development & Tourism Investment Company, will provide 350 luxury rooms and 45 villas creating a new destination for tourism in Libya and the Mediterranean.
Dramatically etched with wadis, historic ruins, sandy beaches and tall sandstone cliffs, the Al Birdi region offers an exceptional opportunity for the development of appropriate tourism which will preserve and enhance these natural features.
The desert site is located on the plateau south of an existing village and features Ottoman ruins and an Italian Memorial. The resort will be perched above the cliff top providing uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean.
DMA’s architectural and interior design concept draws inspiration from traditional North African architecture referencing the geography, culture and style in a contemporary manner. On arrival guests pass through a dramatic Citadel wall before experiencing the beauty of what lies within. The Citadel wall also acts to screen the hotel from the Ghibli, a hot, dust-bearing desert wind.
The hotel is designed around a series of courtyards, which are slowly revealed through the careful interplay and framing of spaces, providing glimpses of the archaeological and natural desert features that lie beyond. The design aims to maximise environmental benefits and features a series of towers to enable natural ventilation.
The hotel interiors have been designed to contrast against the architecture and will feature splashes of rich colour, bespoke mosaics and opulent finishes. The hotel will include two signature restaurants, a spa, leisure, and conferencing facilities.
