The new flagship property of Cedar Court Hotels, Yorkshire’s largest independent hotel group, is the result of a £25m development at the city’s Grade II-listed former railway headquarters. 
 
Completed in 1906, the original design was carried out jointly by William Bell, who produced the basic structural design, and Horace Field, who worked on the exterior embellishments and interior detail.
 
As part of the refurbishment, Mackenzie Wheeler was appointed by Acropolis Properties Ltd to remove insensitive alterations and consider potential additions in considered liaison with English Heritage, The Town Planning and Tourism Authorities, for the purpose of providing tourist and business visitors with a five-star hotel experience.
 
Their scheme for the rejuvenation of the building respects and retains the original cellular layout of the former office building, with sensitive introduction of bathroom accommodation creating 107 guestrooms and suites, each with their own particular style and layout. The grander spaces on the ground and first floors of the west wing are devoted to lobby, dining, function and syndicate rooms, as well as a spa.
 
Design Bank and Spatial Design also collaborated on the project.
