DMA win international design competition

Amari, the Thailand-based hotel brand, has appointed Dexter Moren Associates to work with them on the expansion and refurbishment of the Amari Coral Beach Resort.
Situated on a secluded headland next to the popular Patong Beach in Phuket, the existing resort offers panoramic sea views and a private beach.
The brief from Amari Hotels requires an additional 80 luxury rooms, a new feature restaurant and lounge facility, along with remodelling of existing restaurants to reflect Amari’s new brand philosophy which celebrates the “rhythms and colours” of Modern Asia.
DMA’s design solution proposes a series of individual tower clusters that nestle into the tropical hillside, each accommodating six units and a plunge pool with sea views. The towers house two bedrooms per floor to allow each room to benefit from a corner location and surrounding balcony. Rooms are enclosed with glass slide-away doors and the balcony with folding shade shutters so as to provide a variety of individual guest options in respect of temperature control and privacy. The clusters introduce ‘butterfly’ roofs - a contemporary take on the traditional thatched roofs - and are designed to collect water and discreetly house solar panels. A selection of indigenous materials such as timber and local stone will be used to blend into the natural environment.
A new lounge and bar provides guests with a place to unwind after their flight or relax prior to departure, and is linked to a feature ‘grazing’ restaurant. The footprint is layered to the contours of the land and gives panoramic views to diners on every level.
DMA are working with J2 and a local practice to deliver the scheme on site.
