Ritz-Carlton to open its first ‘eco-hotel’ in October

The Ritz-Carlton in Charlotte, North Carolina, designed by architects Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates, Inc is being described as the company’s first “eco-conscious”hotel.
With construction and operations designed to attain LEED® Gold certification, the contemporary hotel features 146 technologically-advanced guest rooms, a 13,000 square-foot penthouse Wellness Center with Aqua Lounge and saline-treated swimming pool, street-side BLT Steak restaurant, and more than 12,000 square-feet of meeting and conference space.
Architects Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates, Inc have designed the hotel which is part of the Bank of America Corporate Center. Interiors are by Frank Nicholson Inc.
Environmentally-focused features of The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte include:
• A green vegetated roof to insulate the 18-storey building, slow rain runoff and cool the air through evapotranspiration (evaporation of water from leaves)
• An in-house water purification and container system that will divert 73,000 plastic bottles from landfills, save more than 104 barrels of oil, eliminate nearly 49 tons of CO2 emissions and save almost 605,000,000 BTUs of electricity each year
• Stylish employee uniforms made of fabric derived from regenerated plastic bottle materials
• A state-of-the-art air transfer system that circulates outside air into guest rooms
• A dedicated hotel Bike Valet, plus 150 bicycle parking spaces and complimentary bikes for guests to use in the Uptown district
• Complimentary parking for Hybrid vehicles
• Complimentary weekday morning guest transportation via Hybrid vehicle
• Recycled aluminum conference tables, recycled leather furnishings, sustainable woods, all-organic dining menus and all-organic Wellness Center products and treatments
• Lobby Lounge signature martinis, cocktails, wines, coffees and flavored iced teas using sustainable
farm-to-bar and regionally-grown ingredients
• Plant irrigation using captured rainwater
