Richmond International reveals design concept for London’s Langham
12 May 2009 GMT 10:06 (London)
Ahead of its re-launch in June, following a period of major renovation and refurbishment, Richmond International has revealed its design concept for The Langham London.
Richmond has been responsible for the transformation of the entrance lobby, Palm Court lounge, extensive conference and banqueting facilities, guestrooms and suites, which have taken five years and £80 million to complete.
Built in 1865, The Langham was designed to capture the graciousness and elegance of the Victorian world by combining the styles of the grand country house, the sophisticated town house, and the comfort of an English gentleman’s club. At that time, its décor included an eclectic mix of influences from all over the world.
“Our aim has been to re-create this sense of Englishness and sophistication, reflecting the architecture, proportions and interiors of London’s grand houses in the late 19th century,” explains Jane Wickings, Associate, Richmond International. “We have used more contemporary finishes and design details that sit comfortably alongside the more classic elements to ensure that the hotel will regain its individual character and position in the luxury market. This strong juxtaposition of past and present will not only make it relevant for today but will also create a design that has a timeless quality.”
All aspects of the design combine modern elements and traditional methods and crafts unique to The Langham. Specially commissioned pendants and chandeliers of hand-blown Murano glass feature in the lobby and Palm Court, together with richly figured marbles and timbers. References to the heritage and style of the hotel are evident throughout the public areas with decorative details incorporated into custom-made bronze and glass gates, and metalwork feature panels in the reception.
A key part of the design concept is the reinstatement of the Palm Court lounge as the heart of the hotel. Here, contemporary materials and feature finishes mix with the classic sparkle of cut mirrors and crystal alongside a rich colour palette.
More design details will be revealed in a full review of The Langham in a forthcoming issue of Sleeper Magazine.
