Jumeirah’s London hotel gets the go-ahead as Beetham Tower is given green light
26 March 2009 10:26 GMT (London)
The British government has given the green light to developers Beetham Organisation’s plans for a 52-storey tower at 1 Blackfriars Rd, London.
Jumeirah have already signed as anchor tenant for the building, and plan to develop a 261-bedroom luxury hotel there.
The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Hazel Blears, has ruled that the £1bn mixed use scheme is in an appropriate location. Blears had called in the scheme after Southward Council granted planning approval in July 2007.
Hugh Frost, chairman of Beetham Organization, said: "This is a much needed boost to London. The development is a vital part of the regeneration of the South bank of the Thames, creating an iconic landmark and tourist destination, as well as providing jobs and a total transformation for the area."
Ian Simpson Architects designed the 175m high glass tower. The Jumeirah Hotel, to be located at the base of the tower, will feature 261 rooms and suites, several restaurants and bars, a ballroom and a variety of meeting spaces plus a state of the art spa, health and leisure facility.
